I love Thanksgiving, but not for food and family, parades or sales, and certainly not for the immediate launch into the Season-Of-Unbridled-Consumerism. Not even because of a personal sense of gratitude for whatever good exists in my personal circumstances. I do enjoy all of these, except for the season of the consumer. And as I have been for many years, I am grateful for my family and friends, near and far, and for everything else that we have worked so hard to have.
But I love Thanksgiving because it is one holiday that unites us all, in America and throughout the world if we wish. On one day, we all can look at the good things in our lives and feel happiness that they exist. Gratitude is a universally available emotion. 0If you are of a religious persuasion you can thank God, and gratitude must feel the same regardless of what concept of Diety you have. And even an athiest must be able to experience the same sense of warmth at the perspective of some goodness before them - family, friends, a beautiful landscape or music or whatever your preferred medium for artistic expression.
Thanksgiving unites us across all our diversities: people of any background can experience gratitude for what they have.
Thanksgiving focusses our attention on positives: what we have, not what we want but don't or can't have. In this sense it is a very mature holiday, that gets better with age and experience as it were.
So, what are you grateful for?
